What's Behind the Walls
Most homeowners never think about their pipes until something goes wrong.

Supply Lines (Incoming Water)
Modern homes use PEX ๏ฟฝ flexible, durable, and cost-effective. Older homes may have copper (still excellent) or galvanized steel (should be replaced if found). Your contractor will assess what's there and recommend what makes sense.

Drain Lines (Outgoing Water)
Most SoCal homes use ABS ๏ฟฝ the black plastic pipe standard in California. Older homes may have cast iron, which is great for noise reduction and very durable. If drains are being relocated, slope matters: California code requires a minimum 1/4 inch drop per foot.
Safe, Code-Compliant, Efficient
Three things every bathroom must have under California code:
GFCI outlets โ required within 6 feet of any water source. They cut power instantly if moisture is detected.
Dedicated 20-amp circuit โ bathrooms can't share circuits with other rooms.
Exhaust fan โ must vent directly outside (not into the attic), minimum 50 CFM. Proper ventilation prevents mold and is required by code.
California Title 24 requires high-efficiency lighting โ LED is the standard. Energy-efficient upgrades may also qualify for utility rebates through SCE or LADWP.
Your Choices
Tile Surrounds
Full design freedom and lasts decades when installed correctly with proper waterproofing. The premium choice for primary bathrooms.
Prefab Acrylic / Fiberglass
Faster, seamless, and budget-friendly โ a smart choice for secondary bathrooms. Both are great options depending on your goals.
Standard Soaking Tub
Low maintenance and timeless. A freestanding soaking tub often delivers more luxury for less cost and minimal maintenance.
Jetted Tub
Adds a spa feel but requires its own electrical circuit and regular upkeep. Great if luxury spa-like bathing is a priority.
What You Can and Can't Change
California code sets basic clearances your contractor must follow โ toilet position, door swing, ceiling height. Most of these are easy to work around in a standard remodel.
Moving plumbing does add cost, so a good contractor will always design around existing rough-in locations where possible โ and be upfront when moving something is genuinely worth it.
Making Your Bathroom Work for Everyone
If someone in your home is struggling with mobility, a remodel is the perfect time to fix that. Simple upgrades make a huge difference โ and grants may cover the cost.
Walk-In Shower
Zero-threshold walk-in shower eliminates the step-over barrier entirely.
Grab Bars
Installed at toilet and shower for stability and fall prevention.
Wider Doorway
For wheelchair access โ a critical modification for aging in place.
Non-Slip Flooring
Textured or slip-resistant tiles prevent dangerous falls in wet conditions.
Raised Toilet
Comfort-height toilets are easier for seniors and those with limited mobility.
Handheld Showerhead
Flexible positioning for seated bathing or assisted care needs.

Permit Required
Moving plumbing, electrical upgrades, new exhaust fans, layout changes, or expanding the space โ your contractor handles all of it.
Note: Permit fees vary by city, typically ranging from $200 to $2,500 depending on scope. Your contractor will confirm the exact cost upfront.
